Family Counseling Service

Summer of Healing Camp 2023

Camp information:

Family Counseling Service has been providing therapeutic camps to children who have experienced trauma for the past 24 years and has helped over 1,600 children recover from the effects of abuse.

  • Family Counseling Service has partnered with Camp Ronald McDonald House Charities to host the camp at Eagle Lake, California. Eagle Lake is the second largest natural lake in California located in the high sierras just outside of Susanville.

  • The volunteers help the child heal from trauma in a nonjudgmental and safe space by spending the week alongside the children. Volunteers sleep in the cabins, eat with, and do all activities with the children creating a stable environment.
  • Children and volunteers have the opportunity to have fun by swimming in the lake, playing lawn games, learning archery, riding bike, and creating art together.
  • Children are given the chance to have role models and build positive experiences with healthy adults.
  • Volunteers are given the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children who have experienced abuse.

  • In addition to all the fun camp has to offer, campers are empowered to overcome the emotional effects of trauma through a group trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy approach.

Highlight: One week of camp is equivalent to one year of therapy.

A former camp participant has recently joined the military.

Another camp participant started an archery club at her school after learning archery at camp.

Additional camp participants have volunteered for camp as adults and helped the children heal and grow.
